Tips for Buying Used Instruments

used-instruments-300x300If you need to buy analytical equipment on a limited budget, buying it used could be the answer. Each year, state and federally funded research facilities release good instrumentation into the secondhand market and buy new instruments to preserve their funding. To ensure that what sounds like a good deal is one, observing some time-tested tips for buying used instrumentation is crucial. Below are five tips for purchasing quality used analytical instruments.

Only Buy from a Professional Seller

In pursuit of the best price, some companies shop for instruments on auction websites and at company liquidation sales. The problem? In some cases, the seller can’t guarantee that an instrument is in perfect working order. On the contrary, you are the one who is expected to be the expert. If you are not trained to assess the quality of the instrument that you need, buy it from a seller who is.

Examine an Instruments Service Record

When shopping for instruments that require maintenance, request a copy of their logged service record. Like other types of equipment, analytical equipment that has a spotty or missing service record could lead to unexpected repair issues that halt your work process. Due to its soft environment, analytical equipment seldom displays signs of poor maintenance on its exterior, hence the need to carefully examine its service record.

Ask for the Right References

If you intend to buy an organic elemental analyzer (OEA), request references to customers who purchased the same equipment, and request at least six of them. By speaking with customers who a seller doesn’t normally refer to, you may hear a different opinion of a seller’s customer service quality than when you speak with its normal references. If all references respond positively, you can feel that much more secure in your purchase.

Check the Seller’s Business Record

Most companies know to do it, but some companies do not, and that is to check a seller’s record at the Better Business Bureau (BBB). In particular, check to see if the company resolves customer complaints promptly. If it has no complaints or resolves complaints right away, you can feel confident about its dedication to customer service.

Inspect an Instrument Firsthand

If you shop for high-priced instrumentation online, inspect it in person before you buy it. Alternatively, if you can’t travel to the seller’s location, have a third party perform the inspection for you. As some buyers find out the hard way, Internet photos can conceal signs of wornness, breakage, warping, etc. Because a used purchase is usually a final purchase, inspecting used instruments firsthand is ideal.

When you take the right steps, you can purchase quality analytical instruments used. Although most sellers of pre-owned equipment are professional and customer oriented, some are not. The steps above will help you avoid the latter as your search for the former. From public companies to private laboratories, various entities use pre-owned analytical equipment with success. To get your equipment pre-owned and save money, contact an appropriate equipment seller today.

Music Transcription Services

Online music transcription services offer quality and custom transcription in guitar, bass guitar, piano, violin, and drums. Music transcription is the process of writing down a song in a notated and comprehensible format commonly known as sheet music. Such services have transcribers who typically write down the notations and chords in a music sheet after listening to the melody, solos or chord progression several times.

There a number of musicians who enjoy transcribing songs and instruments, and these professionals are highly accurate and detail oriented. Their transcriptions provide music fans an opportunity to understand musical structure in an easy to follow format so they can use and play it later and preserve it forever. These are the reasons why there are many bands and musicians nowadays who hire musicians to transcribe their music. Many bands realize the great demand for their sheet music and sell it along with an MP3 download or separately.

Piano and guitar are the most commonly transcribed, but there is certainly a demand for bass guitar, drums, violin and all other instruments in all genres. Besides these, long recorded beautiful music pieces are also transcribed and improvised by many, to give the music an original and contemporary touch.

Music transcription services employ music transcribers who need to listen to music pieces from any audio sources like a cassette, MP3/mid/wav/aiff format, CD or even a live music recording. Hence music transcribers need to have strong knowledge and training in music including identifying notes and chords. These music transcribers typically listen to a section of music over and over again to understand all the notes and chords and then break it down into multiple but simpler music pieces. The transcribed music might however look very lengthy and intricate, if the audio quality is difficult i.e. if the music includes more number of instruments, specific jargon or layers in them.

Though genuine and reliable music transcription services usually employ learned music transcribers for transcribing music, there are also a few companies that use software or electronic scoring for the purpose. However many people feel that electronic scoring does not give accurate results and hence you need to stay away from audio transcription services indulging in these practices.

If you are looking for a good music transcription service provider, then it highly recommended that you hire an established, reliable and credible musician on the internet. In addition, find out what audio formats they accept and what they charge for their services. Checking a few reviews and samples. It will help you to hire a music transcription service provider who is genuine, and lead to lead to high-quality, timely, and cost-effective music transcription services.

Time To Choose Your First Musical Instrument

Music makes the world go round, or was it money? Either way, if you feel you need a new hobby, something fun and entertaining, you could do worse than trying out a musical instrument. There is no age limit on learning to play; there are no time restrictions. You can choose to get professional lessons, learn with a friend, or just teach yourself at whatever pace you fancy. When it comes to choosing an instrument, well, you are literally spoilt for choice. Let’s take a look at the types available and see what tickles your fancy.

Electric Avenue!

Most modern bands will use electrical instruments; they are more versatile and offer more of a variation in style and substance. The obvious choice is the electric guitar. Everyone dreams of being a guitar hero; you probably played the computer game a few times. However, you should bear in mind the fact that it will take some time before you can take to the stage and dazzle the audience with your fancy finger work. The electric guitar can be used for most genres of music: rock, jazz, blues and country. You may prefer the guitar’s smooth and lick cousin, the electric bass; it only has four strings but is invaluable for helping the band keep a rhythm.

Your Neighbors Will Not Be Happy!

The next choice of instrument does not need electric mumbo jumbo to make a lasting impression – the drums! It’s a popular choice, but not with the other house guests. It can take some time to master. However, when you become proficient at the drums, your services will be in demand, by all and sundry.

Brass Instruments

Perhaps Soul and Jazz is more to your liking than rock music? If so, you should consider something along the lines of a saxophone, or perhaps a trumpet or trombone. The saxophone can easily be integrated into blues, soul and rock music as well; it is nothing if not versatile.

Folk Time?

There are a host of instruments that do not require electricity; they are known as acoustic instruments, and there are dozens to choose from. The beauty of something like an acoustic guitar is the sheer portability of the system. You do not need expensive and bulky amplifiers, leads and other gimmicks; what you see is what you get! Other members of the acoustic family are: the banjo, accordion, mandolin, the fiddle and too many to mention here.

What’s Next?

So you have chosen your weapon or instrument of choice, good for you! Sadly, however, you cannot get a decent note out of the beastly thing. Your friends and family are already avoiding you; the house is always empty within five minutes of you playing, how come? Well, it’s probably something to do with the din you are creating, have some mercy on their hearing. For example, a violin in the hands of a novice player will sound like a cat being tortured. There is a solution; it’s called ‘music lessons.’ The good news is that music teachers are fairly pleasant people and will soon be able to get you back on track – have fun, and don’t upset the neighbors too much!

How to Preserve Your Woodwind Instrument

Most accidents happen with these instruments, when they are not put into their cases in between use. A favourite accident is with children who practise in their bedrooms and leave the instrument temporarily on their beds; then subsequently sit on them during a lapse of memory. Keys are bent out of place and in the case of flutes, they take on a decidedly banana-looking shape. When not in use, keep the instrument in its case, as that is the safest place for it. Equally, the popular gig bags best avoided with younger children as damage can still be caused if accidentally dropped. A hard case will always offer the best protection.

When putting an instrument together, the aim is to position the hands so that there is minimal pressure applied to any of the keys. With the saxophones the principal danger is with the crook (Top joint). With clarinets and oboes there are keys that need to be matched up from one joint to the next and those are at high risk of damage. When in doubt, bring the instrument into a recognised repairer to be seen to. All cork joints are to be greased regularly to avoid any difficulty when fitting the joints together and therefore putting unnecessary hand pressure on the instrument, leading to damage of keys. Some teachers offer pupils Vaseline as a substitute to the Woodwind cork grease, but the ingredients are not exactly the same and it should therefore not be recommended.

It is a myth that metal joints on flutes and saxophones need greasing. If the instrument is well made (such as a Jupiter flute), there should be no need for lubrication.

Food and playing a Woodwind instrument do not mix. It makes more work with cleaning the instrument afterwards and can put your pads at increased risk of needing replacement if they get food substances or drink being absorbed into them.

When you have finished playing your instrument, it needs to be dried before replacing into its case. No matter how capable a musician the player is, there is always condensation produced on the inside of the instrument from playing. A Pull-through (cloth with weight attached to a piece of string) is the simplest and most effective method of drying the inside of the instrument. This prevents moulding pads and cracking, in the case of wooden instruments. With a flute, it is simply a case of using a special wood needle and cotton cloth. Metal needles are also out on the market, but with many years experience in instrument repairs and services, I feel metal is more likely to mark the inside of the instrument. For the exterior of the flute, a silver polish cloth works well, but be careful not to be too over zealous with it as springs can be knocked out of place in the process.

No instrument responds well to extreme changes in temperature. Watch that the instrument is not being stored next to a radiator or left in a hot car or conservatory that is prone to more extreme ranges of temperature. The integrity of pads can be affected due to melting glue that holds them in place.

It is recommended that woodwind and brass instruments are taken to a qualified repairer at least once a year for servicing to keep the instrument in good playing condition. This ensures that the instrument can continue to play at its optimum capacity.
