It amazes me to see people buy musical instruments for their kids or themselves, how they go right out and get the most expensive top of the line one they can find. Especially if they are just starting out.

Maybe they believe that getting a high priced instrument will somehow make them play better or they are convinced they will actually stick with this venture. But unfortunately for most of them, they will lose interest in it after awhile and it will work it’s way into the closet.

Fortunately for us this is good news and is my first tip for getting a good deal. Look for classifieds in the musical instrument section of the newspaper or online and search for “like new” or “barely used” items.

When you find what you want, do a preliminary check of what it’s going for new. Go out and inspect the instrument visually and try it out. Then negotiate your best deal. I usually offer about 60% of what it is worth new if it’s not too old and in very good condition.

Tip 2 would be to check out moving sales. Again, look in the newspaper or online. You can get all kinds of deals here, on most anything. But especially on the larger musical instruments like piano’s, organs, etc.

Tip 3 would be Ebay. Not my favorite and can be risky. Make sure to question the seller thoroughly about the item in question, don’t overpay for shipping (which alot of times includes handling charges) and make sure you get generous time to return it if necessary.

On the flip side of it, Ebay is great for selling bargains you may find that your not going to personally use. Musical instruments are popular on Ebay and can be a great way for you to make extra money.

Lastly, I would check out your local music store and see if they have any sales going on with new closeout instruments or any good trade ins you can buy at a bargain. Just remember that the store owner is looking to make a profit on it, so make sure it’s a good deal and negotiate.
